A lot of people look to the internet to find alternate sources of income. One such source are online data entry jobs, and they happen to be one of the easiest ways to earn a living through the internet.

If you have a laptop, an internet connection and a good work ethic then you can take up data encoding as an online job. You don’t have to be a good writer or typist to do this sort of work. All you need is a little speed and diligence, and you will be able to start making money through this sort of work. So if you are interested in taking up an online data entry job then here’s what you need to know.

What is Data Entry?

Before we move on to cover the main topic, let’s take the time to define what data entry is. Data entry is any task that involves operating special equipment (usually a mobile gadget or laptop) to input data into a computer network or system. To put it another way, data encoding involves gathering data from various sources, compiling them and then sending them to the appropriate networks or database.

Most online data entry employees and contractors also use a keyboard or a laptop to input the data (usually numerical or alphabetic in nature). A good example of such tasks is compiling electronic statistical data or online worksheets, and then sending said data to the appropriate computer storage network.

How Do Online Data Entry Jobs Differ From Data Entry at the Office?

Most online data entry operators perform the same types of work as their office based counterparts do. The only difference is that they get remote access to certain parts of their client’s infrastructure instead of direct access.

However, in recent years, companies were able to parse out data entry jobs into smaller and smaller tasks, and allocate them across large work groups, many of whom are online contractors. What this means is that if you were to take online data entry work, you will most likely be assigned small entry or verification tasks instead of a large project. These kinds of jobs don’t pay much but they don’t require a lot of work either.

How Much Can You Expect to Earn From Online Data Entry Jobs

Online or home-based data entry jobs are meant for independent contractors with short term contracts. So don’t expect a minimum wage. Instead, persons who work online data entry can expect to be paid in the following manner:

– Per hour
– Per piece or finished work
– Keystrokes per hour/per minute
– Per word

As for payment, online and home based data entry jobs can pay as low as $1 per hour to as high as a regular salary for office data entry. There are also clients who are prepared to pay fixed amounts for specific projects.

Ultimately, however, your pay will depend on what your client wants you to do. The more difficult the jobs are, the higher the income that you can expect to receive.
